Oklahoma Mule Deer Record Set at March Rack Madness

On March 6th, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation held its first March Rack Madness event. The event was open to deer hunters across Oklahoma. Hunters could bring in antlers from deer that had been harvested during the 2016-2017 season and have them scored for free. Among the racks brought in was a new record setting pair of Mule Deer antlers. The rack came off of a deer harvested in Cimarron County by Ron Jones of Pryor. The official score was 226 and 4/8. The rack can be seen in the slideshow below, from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Instagram.

The rack landed Jones on the top of the list of the largest mule deer harvested in Oklahoma. The previous number one was harvested by Chris Hensley of Moorland back in 1974. Jones’s rack beat Hensley’s by 11 4/8 inches.

Jones was also recognized by the Cy Curtis Awards Program. The program, established in 1972, recognizes trophy deer taken throughout Oklahoma.
